I am loving this painting! That sky is everything I wanted it to be in my head. Sometimes something gets lost in the translation from head to hand, but not this time. Today I added in the dark trees between the sky and the lakeside using ink and green-blue watercolors. I think they’ll only need a few more passes after this too so it’s moving quickly.

10,000 Hours Series

Works in Progress you can watch in bite-sized pieces.

Baby steps are good steps. My 10,000 Hours series is my attempt to keep taking those little steps toward finished pieces without getting bogged down in the minutia that usually keeps me from posting. It’s just me, my studio, and some music as I get down to the nitty-gritty of creating. Watch the bite-sized videos to see the artist’s process for yourself.

July 8 - Buttercups

July 8 - Buttercups

Happy belated Independence Day fellow Americans! So the week was totally a mix of vacation and feeling sick, which explains why I didn’t post anything last week. n_n; But when I finally got back to my studio table, I was determined to knock out those last big spaces in the sunbeams and the remaining shadows. I tackle them hear, given the sunlight another last pass of creme and the shadows their last color layer of green or yellow over the nice depth already there.

July 12 - Buttercups FINALE!

July 12 - Buttercups FINALE!

The buttercups have bloomed into their full beauty and I love them! For the last finishing touches I added vines and vague leaves into the sunbeams so they wouldn’t look so empty, and then the last polish to the buttercups themselves, darkening their shadows and smoothing out their colors.

The Performance of Art

The Performance of Art

Creating art is difficult enough without an audience. Imagining a scene, trying to spin it out of your head and onto paper without losing too many of the details, not to mention the mistakes! Every piece has them, but when you’re alone in your studio, who’s going to notice later once you’ve painted over it?
